What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a point-of-use filtration technology that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores small enough to block dissolved contaminants, heavy metals, nitrates, fluoride, and most other impurities.

A standard under-sink RO system includes:

  • Sediment pre-filter: Protects the membrane from particles
  • Carbon pre-filter: Removes chlorine that would damage the membrane
  • RO membrane: The core filtration stage — removes 95–99% of dissolved contaminants
  • Post-carbon polishing filter: Final taste and odor improvement
  • Storage tank: Holds filtered water ready for use
  • Dedicated faucet: Dispenses RO water at the kitchen sink

What reverse osmosis does well:

  • Produces the highest quality drinking water available for residential use
  • Removes nitrates, fluoride, arsenic, lead, chromium, and other dissolved contaminants
  • Removes up to 99% of total dissolved solids (TDS)
  • Eliminates virtually all taste and odor concerns at the drinking tap
  • Ideal for cooking, coffee, baby formula, and ice

What reverse osmosis does not do:

  • It only treats water at one point — the kitchen tap (or wherever the system is installed)
  • It does not protect your shower, laundry, or appliances
  • It does not remove chlorine from your shower water or bath water
  • It produces water slowly and stores it in a tank (typically 2–4 gallons)

The Key Difference: Point of Entry vs. Point of Use

This is the most important distinction:

Whole home filtration treats all the water entering your home — protecting every fixture, appliance, and person in the house from chlorine, sediment, and chemical exposure.

Reverse osmosis treats water at a single point — delivering ultra-pure drinking water at one tap.

They are not competing solutions. They address different aspects of water quality at different points in your home.

What Does Florida Water Actually Contain?

Understanding what is in your water helps clarify which system addresses your actual concerns.

Sarasota and Charlotte County municipal water typically contains:

  • Chloramines (used instead of chlorine for disinfection) — cause taste and odor issues, can irritate skin and eyes
  • Disinfection byproducts — trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) formed during treatment
  • Hardness minerals — calcium and magnesium at 150–300 mg/L (hard to very hard)
